| New shrubs for 2008! Every year, we browse through hundreds of
shrubs, deciding what we want to stock here at the nursery. We
look for plants with qualities that include hardiness, good structure,
long bloom times, and disease-resistance, just to name a few. We
are always seeking new cultivars that are a step ahead of the rest, so
that we can offer you what we believe are the best plants possible.
With that said, we'd like to give you a run-down of some of the exciting new
plants we will be carrying this year.
Abelia mosanensis Hardy Abelia
This abelia is a super hardy, somewhat larger version of the abelia
we typically carry. From late May to early June, it blooms
hundreds of small white flowers that start out as pink buds. The
flowers are extremely fragrant, some say they even outdo lilacs! |
|
Abeliophyllum distichum White Forsythia
This plant is native to Korea, and its leaves resemble those of an
abelia. An attractive early bloomer, its a change from the typical
yellow springtime display. This plant also has a nice red fall
color, and benefits from being cut back after blooming. |
| Aronia melanocarpa Chokeberry
'Viking' is a popular new aronia cultivar that blooms slightly
earlier than others, and holds its fruit for an exceptionally long time.
It has a good fall leaf color and its fruit is said to be high in
vitamins. This plant is useful as a hedging plant.
'Iroquois Beauty' is a compact chokeberry, only reaching a
height of 3 feet. It sports the same package as the other chokeberries
but with less height. |
| Caryopteris incana 'Sunshine Blue' Bluebeard
This is a brighter, better Worcester Gold! Larger and brighter
leaves and flowers make this caryopteris stand out from the rest.
Look for ours on our bank in front of the barn! This plant is available
now.
Caryopteris 'Pink Chablis'
A pink Bluebeard! This is one of our favorite new shrubs.
It keeps a neat, compact habit and has cute, fuzzy looking pink flowers.
This plant is available now. |
| Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sputnik' Buttonbush
Round whitish-pink "flowers" cover this plant in midsummer. It
has attractive, dark bark and a bright leaf color. The flowers
resemble tiny pom-poms. |
| Chaenomeles Japanese Quince
'Toyo-Nishiki' is a tri-colored quince, boasting
red, pink, and white flowers all on the same plant. |
Cotinus Smokebush
'Young Lady' is a terrific long blooming green leafed
smokebush with good fall color. Blooms June - August.
'Grace' is an eye catching bright purple with excellent fall color.
Both these plants are available now. |
| Forsythia 'Kumson' Because of it's quick growth
habit, this plant was available to our customers this year, 2007, as you
may have seen it on a visit out to the nursery. This particular
type of forsythia is a far cry from the traditional forsythia you see as
hedges or privacy borders. This kind of forsythia actually prefers
partial shade and has variegated foliage! Just like other
forsythia species, it will brighten up your shade garden with
yellow blooms in Spring, prefers moist soil, and has attractive rose and
orange fall colors.
Forsythia 'Show Off'
A very bright, large flowered forsythia, with a more compact growth
habit, reaching about 5-6 feet. Nice, deep green foliage. |
|
Hydrangea paniculata 'Quick Fire' Hardy Hydrangea
We have many paniculata species of hydrangea here at the nursery, but
the fall season really makes this one stand out from the rest! Its
blooms about a month earlier than other paniculata species |
| Kolkwitzia amabilis 'Dreamcatcher' Beauty Bush Not to
be confused with the beauty berry (callicarpa), this beauty bush
has a unique golden color to its foliage, as compared to other beauty
bushes. It leafs out a bright copper-like color, then turns golden
yellow. The fall color is also attractive, turning from a summertime
lime-gold to a golden orange. This is a nice, colorful addition to
a partially shaded or shady area of your garden. A late Spring
blooming shrub that can grow 6-9 feet at a medium to fast pace.
Plant your 'Dreamcatcher' with Fothergilla, Kumson forsythia, and
Oakleaf hydrangeas for early spring - mid summer blooms of pink, yellow,
& white; a spectacular fall foliage shade garden! |
| Leptodermis oblonga Pink, trumpet-like blooms will cover
this low mounding shrub from late spring - frost. Very fragrant,
would make a great addition along a walkway or even in a pot on a patio!
|
| Lespedeza 'Yakushima' Bush clover A cute compact
shrub with clover-like leaves, though brighter green, and small violet
purple flowers in late summer. An easy to care for shrub that only
reach 12-18" high, making it a great candidate for perennial beds and
small, sunny spaces. Looks great with dianthus and asters; this
combination also makes a nice spring through fall blooming garden for
full sun! |
| Potentilla 'Sommerflor' Cinquefoil Bush A very
bullet-proof shrub that needs little care to show an impressively long
bloom time. Soft green foliage contrasts the dark chestnut bark of
this little plant, and by mid summer you can enjoy bright yellow blooms
until frost. Responds well to pruning, but doesn't need it;
shearing back lightly in spring and late summer will help keep a very
tight growth habit. Easy to care for, likes full sun - part sun,
and is very drought tolerant. We couldn't be more pleased with
this plant here at the nursery; as its first year in the ground it
thrived while other plants took a beating during the summer drought.
It grows quickly to its mature size of 3 x 3 feet, and has a winter
appearance similar to that of spirea. |
| Rhamnus frangula 'Fine Line' Fern-leaf Buckthorn This
is a very unique, somewhat underused plant! Not to be confused
with the native, invasive buckthorn, 'Fine Line' is an upright, narrow,
non-invasive cultivar that has a variety of uses in the landscape.
Use it as a deciduous, narrow hedge for small areas; plant it around
your patio, pond, or walkways; even container gardening can find use for
a 'Fine Line' standing tall and full in a pot! It's bark is a dark
brown, almost black color, and the fine, wispy foliage could almost be
compared to that of rosemary or lavendar - that is, if either herb
produced longer, dark green leaves that were not as stiff. It will
grow 5-7 feet tall and about 2 feet wide. Keep an eye out for this
shrub next year, it may become more popular than you think! |
| Rhus aromatica Fragrant Sumac A great, new sumac that is
entirely non-invasive and of course, non-poisonous (It is in the same
family as poison ivy!). This is a tough, hardy shrub that spreads
up to 8 feet wide, but doesn't grow higher than 2 feet, making it a
great plant for erosion control and pesky hillsides. It has a
pleasant scent when the foliage or bark is disturbed, and an attractive
orange-red fall color. Spring and summertime leaf color is a
glossy green. Unless you're planting your sumac in a poorly
drained area, this plant is not picky about where it lives, and is
easily adaptable to poor soil and drought once established. |
| Salix purpurea 'Nana' Dwarf Arctic Willow A different
take on the classic willow look. This quick growing shrub will
reach 3-5 feet tall and wide with little care in sunny, moderate - moist
soil. Has blue-green foliage of fine texture, looking like many
small, upright willow leaves. A nice compact shrub that grows well
with Agastache (hyssop) and |
| Sambucus 'Black Beauty' Elderberry Purple-black fine, lacy
foliage contrast against this plants large, pink flowers in late June.
In addition to attractive foliage and flowers, it also produces edible
berries - either for the birds, or for your jams and jellies! This
plant can get 6-8 feet tall and wide, so give it some room, as well as
full to part sun and a somewhat moist soil. |
| Symphoricarpos Coral Berry What a neat little plant
this is! This deer resistant shrub will grow 3-5 feet tall and
wide and bears light magenta berries in late summer, which are pleasing
to look at, and are held before small, rounded green leaves. A
great late summer - fall interest plant, it will grow quickly in
full - part sun and has a good branching habit. |
| Syringa 'Evangeline' Early-blooming Hybrid Lilac A
8-10 foot lilac that sports light purple double blooms. Very
fragrant and quick growing, a very attractive, soft colored flower. |
| Thuja plicata 'Can Can' Dwarf Arborvitae, Deer
resistant A dwarf arborvitae, this attractive evergreen has dark green
foliage topped off with cream colored tips. It only reaches about
5-8 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, and best of all the deer don't
bother it! |
| Viburnum dilatatum 'Cardinal Candy' Linden Viburnum We've
seen this cultivar out for some time now and decided we had to get it.
Rough, somewhat leathery rounded leaves entertain in the spring and
early summer; summertime will bring masses of creamy white flowers,
which later give way to the clusters of bright red fruit that earns this
plant its name. It will grow 6-8 feet tall and wide, but simple
pruning will keep this shrub on the smaller side if you prefer.
Extremely cold hardy, and easy to grow in full sun to part shade.
Great for birds, they enjoy the fruit! This plant can be used as
an optional pollinator for 'Micheal Dodge' - another Linden viburnum
with yellow fruit - to produce optimum fruit display. 'Cardinal
Candy' and 'Micheal Dodge' make quite an impressive color statement when
planting near each other because of the contrasting yellow and red fruit
display. |
| Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' Compact European Cranberry
Bush This is a plant we've been asked for time and time again.
Don't confuse it with its cousin, the Dwarf American Cranberry Bush.
It will grow 4-6 feet tall and wide, and produces shiny red fruit.
Flowers are white and lacy, and form in early-mid summer before fruit
develops. Great for low screening, grows in wet or dry soils and
can take full sun - part shade. |
| Viburnum plicatum 'Popcorn' Japanese Snowball Viburnum
One of our favorite new viburnums, 'Popcorn' grows fast, blooms heavy,
and has an awesome fall leaf color. We don't know which season we
enjoy it more: summer or fall! Grows 4-6 feet in part shade or
full sun, and could be useful in areas where viburnums such as 'Shasta'
get too big. Has the same flowering habit as 'Shasta', blooming
hundreds of flowers all along the branches, but Popcorn's blooms are
smaller and rounder. There isn't one bad thing we could think of
to say about this viburnum; it's a welcome addition to the Behmerwald
Nursery plant stock! |

Weigela 'White Knight' A white blooming weigelia with charming,
soft pink buds. It grows quickly in a sunny location and responds
easily to pruning to keep the plant smaller and more compact; let it
grow naturally and watch the little white trumpets protrude off slightly
arched, upright branches. It will grow 5-6 feet tall and wide and
blooms all summer long! A very pretty plant that is drought tolerant and
easy to care for. Plant it out with fragrant viburnums like
Viburnum carlesii 'Diana' for a white-pink color palate that smells
great and is even nicer to look at - summer through fall! |
