Salvia (Sage)
Could there be an easier to grow perennial? Maybe,
but this one is sure near the top of anyone's "easy" list. Salvia,
also called meadow sage, is a well known gardener's standby. 'May
Night' has even been a Perennial Plant of the Year winner. These
low maintenance perennials thrive in sunny locations, don't require tons
of water, and bloom pretty much all summer. They start blooming in
late May/early June and usually slack off by mid-late July, where a
simple trim will encourage them to re-bloom. Sizes range from 12" to 24"
so there's something to fit just about any small spot. Plus, the
deer don't like them - pick from 4 different colors.

Introducing 'Arctic Fire' and 'Bud's Yellow', two newer,
improved cultivars of red twig and yellow twig dogwoods.
The Red: 'Arctic Fire' is a compact, 3-5
foot non suckering variety of red twig dogwood. Its deep
red winter stems make it a top choice for the gardener seeking winter
interest in their landscape, and if the site is a soggy one, all the
better, as Cornus stolinifera thrives in wet areas. Prefers to spend it's days in
the sun, although will tolerate a little shade. Add some fire to
your garden.
The Yellow: 'Bud's Yellow' is an improved
yellow twig dogwood, resistant to disease that other yellow twig
dogwoods have commonly succumbed to in the past. This variety is
also more of a truer yellow, not as lime green as some of the older
cultivars of "yellow" twig dogwood appear. Maxing out at 6-8
feet, this Cornus stolinifera does a great job of providing some
natural screening with the showy winter stem color to boot. |
