Behmerwald Nursery 2008 Spring &
Summer Garden Lectures |
|
Thanks to everyone who's been attending our summer
series of Garden Lectures! Seeing as we've finished our scheduled
sets of lectures, we're now planning on a few more later on in the year,
most likely in September and the first half of October. Here's the
tentative list, no dates posted yet until we can confirm them, but plan
on September/October!
FALL GARDENING
Nature sows seeds in fall, so why shouldn't we?
Learn why fall is such a great time to plant, the benefits of fall
planting, chores to be done in the garden, basic gardening tips and
tasks, and more.
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)
A lecture so good, we're bringing it back again!
We had this lecture last year (aka the "Bugs & Bunnies lecture") so
here's a chance for anyone who couldn't make it. Crucial
information for being a good steward to the environment, IPM covers the
basics of natural, effective, and sensible pest control, such as
companion planting, non-chemical pest solutions, and anything you could
ever want to know about gardening the "green" way. This is one to
save the date for - you won't regret it!
BENEFICIAL BATS
Bats aren't just blood thirsty carriers of rabies -
they're a major form of insect control. Learn the benefits of
bats, their recent decline, and how it can effect us in the long run.
This lecture has an optional bat house class to make your own bat house
to take home with you! A great, fun lecture for families to get
hands-on experience building a bat house and to introduce your children
to integrated pest management!

Our past lectures from the spring/summer of 2008:
MAY 8TH 7:00 PM (THURSDAY)
Wake Up Your Garden!
Basic, refreshing and interesting information, useful to gardener of
ALL experience levels, and fantastic for beginners! Cover
the basics of garden prep, discuss the tools you'll need to get the job
done properly, and learn about IPM (integrated pest management) to help
your garden, and the environment, benefit from natural pest control.

| JUNE 10TH 7:00 PM (TUESDAY) Rain Gardens
This is sure to be one of our most popular lectures! Who
wouldn't want to help conserve water, and enjoy beautiful landscaping in
the process? Learn everything you wanted to know about rain
gardens; find out what plants work best for these eco-friendly gardens,
and find out how easy it is to construct one. Not to mention the
plethora of benefits they offer! Not really sure what a rain
garden is? Check out our info page
here.

| JUNE 17TH 7:00 PM (TUESDAY) Hypertufa Containers
This lecture is a hands on event! Hypertufa containers are a man-made
replica of lightweight tufa rock, and the result is a lightweight,
porous garden container. It looks like it weighs a ton, but, it
doesn't! Mixing cement, sand, peat moss, perlite, and water, you
will construct your very own pot. This class is hands on, so you
CANNOT be late, as the instructors will show you step by step how the
process goes! You must pre-register for this class, and it is
limited to 15 people, so don't delay! A $10 materials fee is
required and covers the cost of materials to make your hypertufa
container. |
| JUNE 21ST 10:00 - 11:00 AM (SATURDAY) Natives in the
Landscape
Another popular topic this year; come out for a refreshing Saturday
morning at Behmerwald and learn all about the benefits of using native
plants in the landscape. We have an array of native plants here at
the nursery, from perennials to shrubs to trees, and we're thrilled to
have a Master Gardener tell you all about how great natives are.
Besides the obvious of being a benefit to our local wildlife and
ecosystem, natives happen to be incredibly tough plants - and rightfully
so, hence their name! Come out and learn about a great topic; you
might be surprised how versatile a native landscape can look! |
| JULY 1ST 7:00 PM (TUESDAY) Hypertufa Containers
A second class in case you can't make the first one, or it fills up!
A $10 materials fee is
required and covers the cost of materials to make your hypertufa
container.
