Don't forget about the birds!! When you landscape your property for winter interest, there is a good chance you will end up benefiting your backyard wildlife as well. Many birds feed on berries and seed of plants during the winter months, if a source is available. Plant shrubs with berries to attract blue jays, catbirds, robins, chickadees, woodpeckers, doves, quail, grouse, and blackbirds, to name a few. Dry grass seeds, birches, and wildflowers will draw finches, juncos, sparrows, nuthatches, and cardinals. Grasses and other dense shrubs provide shelter for birds and other animals during harsh winter winds. Don't forget, too, that even though your yard may boast all these natural benefits for birds, a seed feeder and suet feeder are always a welcome addition! |
