A lesser known native that is known for its tubular light purple flowers that resemble a monkey smiling. Flowers from midsummer into early fall typically in pairs and are pollinated by bumblebees.

Bumblebees make good pollinators for this species because they have the strength to get into the partially closed flower.

Native to swampy wet areas and stream banks, Monkey flower makes a nice addition to rain gardens, pond edges, and wet meadows. Best grown in part shade if the area is drier but grows well in full sun with adequate moisture.
