A low growing evergreen ground cover that produces little white flowers like those of blueberries. Following the pollination little red tart berries will form. Foliage is dark green, round, and glossy. 'Red Sunset' is a more vigorous grower with larger berries than the species.
Primarily pollinated by bumble bees to produce fruit. Foliage is eaten by mammals, especially in its northern range where moose caribou, hares all browse it. Berries are foraged on by many bird species like grouse, thrushes, and bluebirds.
Similar to its relative the blueberry this species prefers moist well drained soils with more acidic soils. Being from a more northern climate it is extremely winter hardy.
