Great foliage color emerging dark purple then transiting into maroon and finally finishing as a dark green. Flowers are a classic pink/purple that emerge before the trees leafs out. Pollinators will enjoy the early blooming flowers. 'Merlot' was created for not only great color but the smaller glossy leaves help it to have a greater heat and drought tolerance.
