We are very excited to have this plant- the male inkberry! When planted near popular female cultivars of Inkberry it will pollinate the flowers and allow your shrubs to get berries. 'Squeeze Box' is smaller than the species and grows in a more uniform upright habit.

The berries from the female(Gem Box, Strong Box, Shamrock) plant are eaten by small mammals and birds. Both male and female plants produce small white flowers that are adored by bees! It supports a specialized bee called Colletes banksi as well as many other generalist bees. The honey produced from Inkberry Holly is said to be excellent! Inkberry is also a host plant for the butterfly species the Henry Elfin.

Best in full sun with adequate moisture. It can be used in rain gardens (Click for more rain garden ideas) as it can handle some flooding, it is probably best in middle to top layers. Many use this species in place of the Boxwood, which is susceptible to the Boxwood Blight and more recently the Boxwood Tree Moth. Good low maintenance screen or hedge.
