Juniperus communis, commonly called common juniper, is a needled evergreen conifer that grows in a variety of different shapes and forms, but Var. depressa rarely exceeds 4 ft in height. The needles turn bronze in winter. Small, yellow flowers appear in the spring which eventually turn into juniper berries on female plants that start as green but turn dark blue to black by fall. Juniperus communis var. depressa is native to North America and can tolerate dry, sandy, and rocky soil.
