This wonderful shrub is native to Eastern North America and produces waxy white berries that are commonly used to make candles and soap. Nicely scented foliage is deciduous to semi evergreen and is a glossy light green color. Flowers are not particularly showy on Bayberry and plants are dioecious meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. Fruits appear from female plants if they are pollinated.
A favorite among birds including Chickadees and Cedar Waxwings! In addition to birds this is also a larval host plant for the Columbia silkmoth. Deer don't really like bayberry partly because of the very aromatic foliage.
Bayberry can handle a wide variety of soils but usually grows best in medium moisture well drained soils. It is often found in coastal regions so it can handle some wet soil and salt.
