Unusual small native tree that is a food source for the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly.
Unusual small native tree that is a food source for the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. The fruits and other parts contain compounds that will numb your mouth if eaten, hence the common name of Toothache tree. These compounds can also be utilized in homeopathic treatments but we cant advise using it for that. The branches have thorns so don't plant it where you need to get close. Grows 15-25 feet tall. It can form thickets if allowed but it also can be managed into a nice small single stem tree.
