Corylus americana is commonly called American filbert or hazelnut. The shrub is monoecious, meaning that there are separate male and female flowers on the same plant. In the spring, the male flowers are showy, 2-3" long, and yellowish brown in color. The female flowers are small, reddish, and unremarkable. Only the female flowers form into hazelnuts which ripen July-August. Nuts are similar in flavor to the European Hazelnut, but can also be left for the squirrels and birds.
