This in one of our favorite native flowering trees! The flowers are small pink/purple pea like blossoms that cover the branches in early spring before the leaves flush out. Foliage is heart shaped and a nice dark glossy green.
Flowers are a wonderful early pollen and nectar source for pollinators likes bees. This species is a host plant for several butterfly and moth species including the Henry Elfin.
Although most references list this tree as growing in full to part sun we like to see it in no more than part sun since its native habit is in the under story.
