Platanus occidentalis, commonly called sycamore, American sycamore, eastern sycamore, buttonwood, or buttonball tree, is native to Eastern North America. The feature of this tree that it's most known for is its brown bark, which exfoliates in irregular pieces to reveal creamy white inner bark. In the fall, its foliage turns a yellow-brown. Small flowers appear in April that are either yellow (male) or red (female). Native Americans hollowed out trunk sections for dugout canoes.
