This wonderful shrub is native to Eastern North America and produces waxy white berries that are commonly used to make candles and soap. A favorite among birds as well! In addition to birds this is also a larval host plant for the Columbia silkmoth! Although it is loved by other wildlife deer don't tend to eat it in part because of the aromatic foliage. Nicely scented foliage is deciduous to semi evergreen and is a glossy light green color. Flowers are not particularly showy on Bayberry and plants are dioecious meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. Fruits appear from female plants if they are pollinated. Bayberry can handle a wide variety of soils but usually grows best in dry - average well drained soils. It is often found in coastal regions so it can handle some wet soil and salt.
