A great native choice for those ornamental grass screens, accents, or border planting. Attractive foliage all year round and beautiful pink flower panicles that bloom in summer. Airy flowers will transition to tan seed heads that will persist into winter. Song birds will enjoy the seeds while the foliage provides cover for them. Foliage is a nice green with a bluish cast in summer, fall brings yellows and oranges, and winter provides tans. Switch grass is also a larval host for several types of skippers and the Common Wood Nymph. Tolerates many types of soils from average moisture to occasional flooding making it highly adaptable to all types of landscape locations. Best grown in full sun which will help keep its strong columnar habit, too much shade will lead to flopping. A slow spreader that tends to not be bothered by deer and can be planted near black walnuts.
