Underused small native that grows 15-25 feet tall and 12-20 feet wide. Works best as an under-story tree. One of the best ornamental features is the distinctive white-striped bark. Another common name is Whistlewood because whistles can be easily carved from the branches. Flowers are later than most other maples with dropping clusters of yellow blooms. Blooms are much more ornamental than other maple species.
It is a larval host plant for the Imperial Moth. It is a great early source of nectar for our native bee species!
