This multi-stemmed native is excellent for wet sites and stream bank restorations. It suckers and will form a thicket. This plant produces attractive catkins, which in turn turn into cones and are enjoyed by birds. Grows 10-20' tall and 8-15' wide in full
Smaller deciduous tree that has nice light green foliage and supports a variety of wildlife with its cones that persist through winter. Catkins will form in early spring showing off a pretty yellow brown color. Prefers moist wet areas but can tolerate drought. Smooth alder has nice smooth gray bark and is typically multi stemmed and will sucker making it a great choice for erosion control areas. A larval host plant for Harvester Butterfly Caterpillars and in their adult form will eat aphids which is a bonus!
