Smaller deciduous tree that has nice light green foliage and supports a variety of wildlife with its cones that persist through winter. Catkins will form in early spring showing off a pretty yellow brown color. Prefers moist wet areas but can tolerate drought. Smooth alder has nice smooth gray bark and is typically multi stemmed and will sucker making it a great choice for erosion control areas. A larval host plant for Harvester Butterfly Caterpillars and in their adult form will eat aphids which is a bonus!
