This little fern is excellent for just about any shady spot as long as its well drained. Thin light green fronds contrast the dark brown stem beautifully and add a lovely texture to the garden. Maidenhair spleenwort is an evergreen making it a great addition to keep interest throughout the seasons. It will spread slowly by rhizomes and can naturalize in optimal conditions.

This is a tough plant! With a large native range that includes almost all of the U.S. it is naturally found on shaded rocky slopes and in rock crevices/walls. It is quite drought tolerant and preforms very well in hard to plant dry shade. The optimal growing conditions are dappled, part shade, shade in medium moisture. This fern does not like wet, non draining soils.
