'Moonglow' was bred to make some improvements on an already awesome native tree! Chosen for its more upright habit, better cold hardiness, and larger flowers! This cultivar tends to be more semi evergreen than the straight species adding more winter interest in addition to the attractive bark. Flowers are 2-3 inches in diameter and have a lovely fragrance! Growing in a nice oval to vase shape as opposed to the more open crown of the straight species. Magnolia virginana has good wildlife value as it is a larval host for several species of butterflies and moths. In the fall birds and small mammals enjoy the bright red fruits that are produced. This tree grows best in full sun to part shade and tolerates a wide range of soils. It is native to wet, boggy areas so it isn't going to be bothered by wet landscapes!
