A good food source for bird species.
Naturally found in wet lowlands, making it a good choice for rain gardens, moist woodland, and hard to plant wet shade gardens. Prefers part shade but tolerates almost full shade. This species can naturalize by self seeding. It tested well in the Mt. Cuba Trials, even the mowing trial making it a suitable lawn replacement option. Typically evergreen but in cold winter may be semi-evergreen. Foliage can be cut back and cleaned up if need be.
