A fantastic sedge for rain gardens, stream bank restoration, or wet meadows. This species loves water, even shallow standing water. The bright green foliage is narrow and forms clumps (hence the common name tussocks). These clumps when in standing water will sit just above water level. The old leaves will turn a straw brown and sit under the nice new green foliage. In late spring a reddish brown spikey flower will form.
This species supports Appalachian Brown butterflies and Eyed Brown Butterflies plus a few species of Skippers. (Click for more butterfly plants) Wildlife will feed on the seeds such as birds. If planted in wetland area turtles will also eat the seeds.
This species can spread pretty rapidly, especially if its in its preferred habitat. Although that may not be great for average garden situations if you need a rain garden filled or need to stop an eroding stream it is a great option.
