'Mt. Airy' is named after the Mt. Airy Arboretum where it was discovered. This plant is a hybrid of the two native Fothergilla species F. gardenii and F. major to produce an intermediate sized plant. 'Mt. Airy' also differs from the species by having a heavier bloom and very consist fall color. This hybrid produces a more upright plant as well.

Fothergilla is a deciduous shrub will bloom from April to May with showy bottle brush shaped flowers. The flowers will also have a nice honey fragrance to them. The flowers are attractive to pollinators. The fall color is absolutely gorgeous ranging from yellow oranges to red purples depending. Handsome dark green foliage in the summer.

Naturally found in wooded areas and many times seen along stream banks. Fothergilla spreads by suckers to form nice colonies. It also shows very good shade tolerance, though the flowering may not be as profuse. This is a slow growing and slow to establish shrub.
