This native cherry tree has loads of 6" long pendulous clusters of fragrant white flowers. The flowers give way to small (3/8") red fruits that ripen to dark purple.
Flowers are loved by pollinators and bloom in April and May. This is a larval host plant for several species of Lepidoptera species like Coral Hairstreaks and Viceroys! Fruits are enjoy by many bird species in the fall.
The fruits are not edible for us directly from the tree but can be made into jam or jelly. They are also used for flavoring liquor.
