A medium sized trees with very distinct foliage, produced 3 types of leaves ovate (spoon), mitten, and 3 lobed leaves. A good wildlife plant as it is a larval host for the Imperial Moth and the Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly. The fruit is also eaten by an array of songbirds and mammals! Flowers are small yellow/green and petaless. Sassafrass blooms in spring before the tree leafs out. Fall produces absolutely gorgeous red, oranges, purples, and yellows! Sassafrass had/has many uses including the bark and roots being used to flavor root beer and teas. It tends to sucker to form thickets but can be maintained as either a single truck or shrub if desired.
