American Elm offers a beautiful spreading crown with dark green leaves that turn a nice yellow in the fall. A larval host plant for several species of butterflies and moths including Mourning Cloaks and Question Marks! It would be especially good to plant to rebuilt habitat that was lost with the introduction of Dutch Elm Disease.
An adaptable tree as long as it has good sun and good drainage. Before Dutch Elm Disease American Elm was used extensively as a street tree and therefore can handle pollution and salt well. Now it is best used as single specimens or small groups to help avoid disease.
