A very large tree getting to 75-100 feet tall and wide with a trunk size getting up to 8 foot diameter. Most notable feather is the exfoliating bark that exposes white. Brown bark peels off in irregular chunks giving Platanus occidentalis its distinctive look. Has an inconspicuous bloom with the male flower being yellow and the female being red. The female flower gives way to the fuzzy round fruit which birds will enjoy. Large 2-5 lobed leaves offer tremendous amount of shade in the summer. Prefers consistently moist soil but tolerates dryer soil. Likes full sun but will tolerates shadier areas. Deer and black walnut resistant. Considered to be the 'most massive tree' native to North America.
