This is a small to mid-sized tree native to the eastern United States including Pennsylvania. White flowers typically bloom in early spring and attract pollinators like bees. After pollination, the flowers will form red fruits in the fall that often persist into winter. The foliage is glossy green during the summer and in the fall it turns beautiful shades of red.

A good wildlife plant that is a larval host for the Red-Spotted Purple. The berries are enjoyed by many bird species like Cedar Waxwings!

Hawthorn tends to be a low-branching tree that can make a nice hedge tree. Grows well in sunny areas with well-draining soil. It is susceptible to Cedar Apple Rust but this fungus is rarely fatal and more of an atheistic issue.
