Common Witch Hazel is a large shrub or large tree that produces flowers in the very late fall/winter. This adds a spectacular show while most plants have already gone dormant for the season. Flowers will emerge after the leaf drop. During the spring and summer the foliage is a nice dark green on wavy margined leaves. Fall color is spectacular! You will see reds, oranges, and yellows in a vibrant color display.
A good fringe season plant for pollinators to take advantage of on warm fall days. This is a host plant for the Witch Hazel Dagger Moth. Birds and small mammals will eat the seeds, while deer may graze on the twigs and foliage. Although the deer do graze this plant it typically recovers very well.
Naturally found as an under story shrub or on woodland margins. Prefers at least a little bit of shade but can handle full sun with adequate moisture. Grows best in rich soils with evenly moist soils.
