An unusual form of Rubus that produces woody trailing stems rather than the typically cane. Similar to other blackberry or raspberry species the stems can form roots when they touch the ground so it can naturalize pretty easily. Stems are usually reddish and will have prickles on them. The red fruits are typically small and quite sour. The foliage takes on a pretty red purple color in the winter and fall. White five petaled flowers bloom in midsummer are quite showy!

Bees love the flowers on this species, rubus species tend to have very nutritious pollen. Birds and other mammals eat the berries.

Prefers dappled sunlight (like sunlight coming through a tree canopy) and is naturally found in moist to wet areas. Because of the trailing nature this species can form a nice mat ground cover.
