This is a small understory tree that can be planted in the shade! Bladdernut produces clusters of white bell-shaped flowers in the spring, usually around April/May. After the spring bloom, it starts working on the seeds. It gets its common name from the inflated, papery casings that hold its seed. These seed pods are quite ornamental and will often persist into winter.
The blooms are enjoyed by pollinators and seeds will be eaten by birds.
This species is naturally found in lowland areas in rich soils. It can be utilized as a stream bank restoration tree as it will colonize and sucker which will help reduce erosion.
