This is a wonderful native tree for shady wet areas that doesn't get too big. Nice dark green foliage in summer with great fall colors of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows. Caprinus caroliniana can be found as multi-stemmed or single and, has a good wide round shape to the canopy. The bark is a smooth gray similar to beech. In spring male and female catkins will form.
The female catkins will turn into winged nutlets that birds will enjoy the seed. This tree is typically found along rivers and streams in nature making it able to withstand some flooding. No serious diseases.
