Blooms will attract pollinators such as bumble bees. It's a host plant for the Green Comma Butterfly. Wildlife such as birds, deer, and foxes enjoy the nutrient-dense berries.
Found naturally in moist woodlands, so it has a good shade tolerance. An easy to grow shrub that doesn't require much attention after planting. Deer don't tend to like the foliage as it is rough and scratchy but they will enjoy the berries if they can get to them before the birds.
