Spring brings a big flush of white mini bottle brush-type blooms. These flowers emerge before the foliage does. After the blooms fade, green leaves start to unfold, and the foliage settles into a powdery blue for the summer. Finally, fall brings bold red, orange, and yellow colors.

Although the best flowering is in some sun this species can handle quite a bit of shade. It is particularly fond of the morning sun and afternoon shade. This species is a slower grower and would make a good choice for smaller gardens.
