Although still beautiful in its own right this is the straight native smooth hydrangea, which means it is not going to be nearly as flashy as the cultivars that are on the market. (Hydrangea arborescens 'Hass Halo' or H. arborescens 'Annabelle')  Although the straight native species may lack the large showy sterile flowers it makes up for it in the eyes of the pollinators but have more of the small true flowers. Flowers bloom in flat clusters from summer through fall.

A lot of different pollinators are attracted to this species, such as bees and butterflies. It is a host plant for the Hydrangea Sphinx moth and Hydran Leaf Tier Moth.

This species is best grown in part shade conditions with evenly moist soils. The more sun the more soil moisture it will need. The flowers are produced on new wood.
